Outside My Comfort Zone: 1 – Blazing Red

Constantly moving outside my comfort zone is the core of my life philosophy. Part of it is trying and learning new things, growing as a person and the other half is all about entertainment – because life without change gets kind of boring… fast.

Last week, I was shopping with a friend, when I posted this photo on Instagram:

Orange Blazer

Blazer & top from Lane Bryant Outlet

An orange blazer is not something I’d normally go for, but I liked the shade. It didn’t hurt that my friend was a good enabler, so I decided to try it out. As a result, I had a conversation with Rachel, of Happyness Magnet who asked if I’d like to join in on a new challenge about moving outside your comfort zone… and the rest is history.

Outside-My-Comfort-Zone

This week, our challenge is titled “Blazing Red”, using a pop of red and a blazer.

Outside My Comfort Zone: 1 - Blazing Red

Blazer – Eloquii, size 24
Blouse – Evans, UK 30/32
Jeggings – Old Navy, size 28
Heels – Tsubo, size 11
Necklace – Style & Co, via Macy’s
Bracelet – Torrid
Ring – New Look

It was tempting to wear my red blazer and call it a day but that wasn’t really challenging myself, which defeats the purpose. So I dug into the depths of my closet and pulled out an unworn item – this Eloquii floral blazer, and decided to create an outfit of things that pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Here is how I did it:

  1. Bold, patterned blazer – most of mine are solid and don’t look like your Grandma’s couch.
  2. Pants – I’m pretty sure you guys know that I hate pants. Nothing new there.
  3. Heels – I’m a klutz and I like to be on good terms with my feet.
  4. Dark/neutral colors – I like bright and obnoxious things.

For several months, I was dying for a floral blazer – the uglier, the better. The thrift store didn’t produce any gems and a couple of online options were iffy, until I found this one. The monochromatic print is great and relatively tame. Of course, when I got it, I loved it but had doubts of how it would work in my wardrobe. I decided to keep it because I figured it would pair well with a lot of my bright, jersey dresses – much like my favorite black & white patterned cardigans. I was going to pair it with one for this challenge but again, felt like it was a cop out.

Even though I hate pants, blazers look great with skinny jeans and a longer top, so that’s the route I went. Most of my shirts are too short to wear with pants, since I prefer skirts and tuck in my tops, so this Evans top gets put through its paces when pants are involved.

Heels and I aren’t exactly friends. Being a klutz is tough. I trip over my own feet, I really don’t need any help (or additional height) contributing to my inevitable downfall. A friend of mine introduced me to a few pairs of heels that I can manage to wear for an extended period, walk (semi) gracefully and not kill myself in. Win! These Tsubo heels are one of them.

The first outfit I tried to throw together for this challenge involved a lot of black and was extremely awkward. I love my bright tights, bold lipstick and bright, fun colors, so I tried something new – to keep things dark, with subtle pops of color via accessories.

I even went outside my comfort zone regarding the photos. I prefer natural light and outdoor shots, but on weekdays it just isn’t possible. These aren’t too bad… and you get a peek of our apartment!

I’m pretty happy with how this outfit came together. I’d actually wear it again! Can’t say that about everything I post up here on the blog… but this works! Fashion is supposed to be fun and experimental. I still prefer my dresses, but sometimes a little change in the routine is good.

Since I found fa(t)shion, I’ve conquered a lot of self imposed or societal “rules”, fears and other things that have held me back from doing and wearing what I wanted, just because I have a fat body. And I inevitably learned that the only rule is that there are no rules.

The way you think and your relationship with your body isn’t something that changes overnight. It takes hard work… in baby steps! Try taking a step outside your comfort zone – big or small – and see where it takes you!

Do you push yourself outside your comfort zone? How do you do it? Or are you happy to stay within?

Five Take: Will you be my valentine?

Valentine’s Day isn’t exactly my favorite holiday but each year we are inundated with pink and red hearts, glitter and more… who can resist?

365.41 - They asked for it!

Most holidays I use my late grandmother’s “secret” sugar cookie recipe and bake a few dozen. At least until people in my family told me they sucked (in comparison, I believe – but who knows), so now I only make them when I feel like it. Apparently they are missed. HAHA, TOO BAD! Anyway, last year I thought it would be funny to make cookies that said BITE ME. The cookie, dirty pervs! A little ironic, possibly bitter (but not), instructional cookies.

Really.

This outfit came out nothing like I planned. The skirt I wanted to wear got eaten by the washing machine so I had to do a little improvising, without caving in and wearing it similar to this. I don’t really have plans for Monday, so I figured a themed, casual outfit would be perfect for running around in. I started out with this:

Five Take: Will you be my Valentine?

And ended up with this:

Five Take: Will you be my Valentine?

Shirt – Evans
Cardigan – Hillard & Hanson, thrifted. (RIP Mervyns)
Jeggings – Old Navy
Shoes – Eini by Tsubo, via 6pm.com
Bracelets, belt – Torrid

It was a little warm so I ditched the belt, cuffed the pants and put up my hair. The rain is supposed to make its appearance on Monday – but here’s hoping for blue skies. I’m kind of missing my old ponytail, if you’re wondering why I’m pouting and holding the stubby one I’m left with in the second photo.

Upon closer inspection… hearts! This particular shirt is no longer available at Evans, but they do have a black version currently available. Personally, I’d be better off with the black…

Don’t forget to visit: Beth, Elizabeth, Monkey and Valerie, to see their outfits!

We’ve had a change in our line-up – Ms. Loaf is talking a break from fashion blogging and Valerie has agreed to join us in her place. My Five Take post from last week is still missing, sorry ladies! I’ve finally amassed enough laundry for a load, so that will get washed tomorrow and I can recreate it.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day? Do you celebrate or prefer to ignore it?

Five Take: Sequins

Well, 2011 is a new year and after a short break, we have decided to continue our weekly challenge – Five Take. In case you’ve forgotten, the idea behind this weekly challenge is pretty simple. We’ve compiled a list of themes and each week, one is chosen. One theme, five people, five different looks. Sounds easy enough, right? This week our theme is sequins.

Don’t forget to visit: Beth, Elizabeth, Monkey and Ms. Loaf, to see their outfits!

All that glitters isn’t gold. I can’t afford to be dripping in gold and diamonds but who can resist some sparkle? Maybe I’m under the illusion I’m a shining star or special snowflake but you know what? Sequins just make me smile. Plus the addition of giving me the ability to blind people in the bright, California sun. What’s not to love?

Sequins seem to be more popular the last few years, popping up throughout the seasons and not just for the holiday glitz and glamor. Despite my obsession adoration, they can be a challenge to wear. Somehow I always default to wearing sequins for fancier occasions, which means rarely or not at all. Over time, I’ve come to acquire pieces that can easily fit in to my regular wardrobe – a cropped cardigan with sequin detail, sequined flats, a sequined purse, etc. This has helped satisfy my need to sparkle but this blazer changed everything.

Five Take: Sequins!

Last year sequined blazers started popping up and I wanted one more than anything. After a furious search and enlisting the help of a friend, we resigned ourselves to the fact that there wasn’t anything comparable in plus sizes. Late one night, browsing the internet I stumbled across a picture. Fat girl, fabulous outfit and can you guess? A sequin blazer. There wasn’t any information and I’ve long lost the link for the image but mysterious person – I thank you. You renewed my cause.

Five Take: Sequins! Five Take: Sequins!

And you know what? I found it. Well maybe not “it” but one that I liked, that came in my size… though not without some agony first! My search brought me to Simply Be UK, which at the time, did not ship to the US. And it was expensive at $130 USD. I thought, debated and questioned my need for this item of clothing. Considered how often I’d wear it. And that was if I could even get one.

But, we know it ended happily! A few months later Simply Be opened their US website and the jacket was mine. I had actually resigned myself to living without but after a sale, coupon code and free shipping, I picked it up for $85. I justified it as my (early) 25th birthday present and told myself I wouldn’t wear it until my birthday in December. Which never happened because I was busy and worn out from preparing for finals.

Five Take: Sequins!

With this sequin challenge, I knew I had to finally wear this jacket. The first outfit started out too dark (probably should have photographed it, oops) – lots of black, sparkly but definitely a party outfit – too fancy for my day to day routine. I added the striped yellow top and red heels to add a little more color and brighten things up.

Do you embrace the call of the sequin? Love ‘em or leave ‘em? What is your favorite piece?

OOTD: Celebrating the New Year

In my New Year’s cleaning frenzy, I managed to misplace my camera cord. I often put things in a “good place” so I can find them again but more often than not results in losing it. You’d think the best place for my camera cord would be my camera bag – where it usually goes but for some reason I decided against that. Oh well! I found it and put it back in the bag… WHERE IT BELONGS! And now I can finally share these pictures with you!

My celebration was pretty low key – just a quiet evening at home! My original plans fell through and I had no desire to drive two hours, in the rain, by myself… so I chose to stay home. I wore this out to lunch with family earlier in the day and to run errands before everything closed down.

OOTD: Celebrating the New Year

Dress (as a top), jeggings: Old Navy

After the 30 for 30 challenge, I’ve fallen in love with jeggings and wearing dresses as tops. So far this winter I’d say this combination has dominated my wardrobe. Throwing on jeggings instead of tights is much easier for quick errands, not to mention warmer but these are definitely showing some wear. In the last several years I’ve had really good luck with jeans and haven’t had a pair wear through on the thighs – but I feel that these are getting close. I was eyeing a pair of grey ones from Old Navy but now they have disappeared from the website. Sad times! Most of the shirts I wear with skirts are too short to wear untucked, so wearing a dress as a top has been the perfect solution to go along with jeggings, as well as getting more mileage out of my dresses.

OOTD: Celebrating the New Year

I pretty much never wear heels because I’m a klutz. Then to find shoes that don’t hurt my feet or give me blisters is almost impossible. This is hard enough to find in regular shoes, so heels are out of the question. Anna has been my shoe guru for a year now and she has pointed me toward some really great buys that are both comfortable and cute. When she linked these heels and raved about the fit – I debated a few days and they went off sale. The next time they came up, I took the plunge. Our feet are basically the same size, so I had high hopes. She is such a bad influence.

OH MY GOD! I CAN WEAR HEELS AND WALK! Okay, I will say that one of my feet is a half size smaller, so that shoe slips a little (easily remedied) but they are comfortable and I can walk normally. It blew my mind. While I did a fair bit of walking in them the first day, with no issues, I wouldn’t commute in them. Heels and stairs seem like a dangerous combination.

Thanks for sticking with me this month! I have all these ideas for posts but when I sit down I can’t seem to write anything down. Hopefully that will change and fast!
