OOTD: Crafternoon Delight

Once a month, I host a “crafternoon” event for some of my friends. It is a social, crafty gathering, where we get together, make stuff and chat. It’s pretty awesome… but I’m not biased or anything. This is what I wore for a laid back Saturday!

OOTD: Crafternoon Delight

Denim shirt – Pure Energy, via Target, 4 (“present” from Chris)
T-shirt – Avenue, 26/28
Skirt – Evans, UK 30
Ring – Cato
Sandals – Clarks, “Caslynn Paula“, 11M

I’ve always been a creative person, but in the last few years “responsibilities” get in the way of hobbies. It isn’t that I don’t have time – I do, but it’s easier to put off things that don’t pay the rent, you know? Or prioritize sleep, getting outside, visiting friends, etc.

So what if Chris won’t get his handknit socks for another year… To be fair – he knows that it takes about two years, which is how long it took me to knit and send a pair to the friend who introduced us. But really, who needs handknit socks in Texas anyway?

I’ll finish them… someday.

Being around other creative people inspires me, so this once a month get-together is perfect – visiting with friends and crafts! The added bonus is productivity – the more time I spent around other creative people, the more I get done. Win, win!

This outfit was chosen for comfort. Summer is creeping up on us, but it’s still cool in the morning, warmer in the the afternoon and definitely unpredictable. I love maxi dresses and skirts because they are perfect for anything! Except for the fact that I’m a klutz.

Today I tripped over a shelf in CVS, after getting my skirt caught and then I drove around with my skirt hanging out of the car door. A neighbor informed me of that when I went to get the mail. At least it wasn’t raining, right?

Despite my tendency to trip (which let’s be real – happens anyway), maxi’s are comfortable and versatile. Especially skirts like this one in a jersey knit. It’s like fancy pajamas. Unfortunately, knits aren’t a great medium for pleats. I have a poor track record with washing them… and then the pleats fall out. What’s up with that?

I ditched 11 pairs of shoes this spring for various offenses. Many of them were just too old, worn out and hurt my feet. Just because they still look cute does not mean my feet have to suffer! It took me a few outings to remember why I started investing in good shoes. Blisters aren’t worth it!

After my purge, I noticed that I was lacking in the sandal department. Since summer in Texas lasts from now until December, I wear them a lot! I remembered to have Chris take a picture of my new summer sandals (also featured in my last post, just hidden) – the “Caslynn Paula” from Clarks, in black. Which are surprisingly comfortable (they have a fancy “ortho” sole), well made, easy to walk in and cute.

Normally, I don’t do well with tall shoes, but I haven’t had any issues with these. The tripping mentioned above was actually done in flats. I’m special like that. They come in black, nude and grey. I wish they had a tan/cognac because I would have snapped those up too. They retail for $109, which is pricey but I got mine for 20% off and they are worth every penny. I’d trade 4 pairs of Target sandals for a pair of these any day!

P.S. I got Chris to take these by promising I’d post them tonight (which basically never happens, and he makes fun of me). BAM! Done.

Have you made any summer purchases? What’s your favorite summer footwear?

Five Take: Pastels

It’s allllliiiiiiiiiive. By it, I mean me.

Well, I made it to Texas. This will be my… third week of apartment living. I have lots to post and share (what’s new) but getting settled in and figuring out my new schedule (work, blah, blah) kind of took priority over anything else. Sorry blog!

Plus recovering from hauling/moving/unpacking all my CRAP to a second floor apartment. And I even had help!

Five Take: Pastels

Shirt – One Stop Plus
Skirt – Webster for Target, 4x
Shoes – Clarks, 11
Belt – Torrid, 4
Jewelry – Miscellaneous stuff I re-discovered while packing.

Anyway, I’m here to FINALLY post a Five Take (slacker that I am). Last weekend, I was set to do the Chevron challenge we had scheduled. I checked Twitter for giggles in the morning… only to see that it got changed! Really, this was no big deal because it was Memorial Day weekend and yeah, I had other things to do.

The idea behind Five Take is pretty simple. One theme, five people… resulting in five different looks. The only restriction is having to shop from our closets. Sounds easy enough, right?

This week? Pastels.

I’m not a pastel kind of girl. I love bold, bright colors. My wardrobe is massive and I left a lot of stuff in California… but there are very, very few pastel items. I thought I had the rainbow (and then some) covered, but apparently not. Surprised? Me too. I didn’t want to miss another week, so I started digging through my last few boxes (ran out of hangers, see question above) and found a few items I wasn’t too enthusiastic about.

Most of them were things that I thought, “Wow, why did I pack this?” Which made me panic… just a bit.

I settled on this shirt – the best of the bunch, which I actually wore last year for INDD. It seemed like the best option for the day, aside from the fact that it I prefer to wear it with a strapless bra… which can be a pain in the ass. And the fact that we’re twinsies, or close enough, color-wise. I have the same shirt in black and the contrast works better, ha ha.

It turned out to be perfect for a warm day, out and about and coffee with a friend!

I tried my hardest to NOT default to wearing it tucked into a high waisted skirt, with a belt. I still have the skirt and belt but wearing it in this unusual (for me) place – my waist! I KNOW.

It was awkward, but I survived.

Let’s talk about the skirt. Guys, I was surprised that Target actually did one of their designer collections in plus sizes. I’ve been out of the loop, but did any of you hear about it before the release?

When ordering a few things for the new apartment… I “fell” into the clothing department, saw the Webster stuff and found myself browsing to see if any of it ran big. Then to my shock, some of the pieces were available in plus!

The skirt is 100% cotton, navy floral eyelet and lined. It is cut with a slight flare and has very shallow pockets. But pockets are better than no pockets! It looks pretty well made and out of good cotton fabric – compared to some of the Pure Energy line. The elastic waistband is a little bulky for my tastes, but it is pretty much what you’d expect.

The prints in the Webster line weren’t all to my taste. Only a handful of pieces were available in plus sizes, this was the only one that I liked. If they had made the whole collection in plus, I would have tried a few more! The downside, of course, is that plus sizes are only available online. Hey Target! I want to try on my clothes in a store too!

This is my exaggerated: “I don’t know what I’m doing!” face/pose?

Five Take: Pastels

SERIOUS QUESTION:

The photo spot – yay or nay? It is possibly my new default (aka close to the apartment and NOT the balcony/hallway) but Chris questions my judgement. You’d think he would have learned by now…

As far as pastels go, I like color, even the muted ones – so I could be convinced to try and incorporate them into my wardrobe, especially the blues and greens. But at the end of the day… bright colors will always hold a special place in my heart.

Is pastel a trend you’d try? What colors do you prefer?

P.S. I missed you all! Thanks for sticking around.

OOTD: Animal affair

I’ve never really been one for animal prints. With my obsessive picky particular tendencies for color, matching and prints, I never found an animal print piece of clothing that appealed to me.

The colors were off. The print was odd (or tiled badly). This is stuff that 99% of people probably don’t give a crap about but it annoyed me. These requirements made animal print one of the few things I was weary about purchasing online, so I avoided it completely.

It wasn’t like my wardrobe was lacking as a result.

OOTD: Animal affair

T-shirt: Merona, size 3.
Cardigan – Old Navy, XXL, no longer available.
Skirt – Avenue, 30/32, here.
Leggings, belt – Torrid
Boots – “Devy” via Roamans, similar here.
Necklace – F21
Lipstick – MAC in Girl About Town

Then Kath (who rocks leopard print, fyi) told me about this supereduperamazingomgiwantedit leopard print cardigan from Autograph that was a silk/cotton blend, with beautiful jet black buttons in the perfect colors, print and style. Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford it and they disappeared by the time that I could.

Not the end of the world, right?

OOTD: Animal affair

Fast forward a few months, and I saw a leopard print sweater in the Old Navy plus section. It was a zippered knit sweater, but the print and color were pretty spot on for my aesthetics. I jumped over to straight sizes and found this baby and her sister (in grey), for almost $20 less!

I ended up buying both and spending less than I would have buying the plus size sweater. Take that Old Navy! Then again, they still have my money.

The point? After this “epic” search, these cardigans have still been hanging in my closet for months. I’ve picked them up or tried them on with an outfit but things never looked right. Today it didn’t look right in the mirror but I decided the hell with it. Why not? And I was pleasantly surprised.

It doesn’t hurt that random strangers in the grocery store told me that my outfit was cute.

OOTD: Animal affair

The lesson? Fashion and personal style are all about trial and error. Some things work, others don’t but you never know until you try (and try again)! You might be surprised.

Speaking of random strangers, this is one of my favorite roadside spots to take pictures. The problem is, everybody is heading home from work right before sunset.

I’ve more or less gotten over taking pictures of myself in public with a tripod and remote. I get that it is probably funny looking, especially since I have “looks” and “poses” even when I try to avoid them. Not one but two cars actually pulled over to sit and watch what I was doing. Really? Don’t you have something better to do?

What are your feelings on animal print? Love it or leave it? Is there a type of clothing, print, color or something else that you’ve sworn not to wear but ended up trying and liking?

Five Take: Floral

The theme for this week’s Five Take is appropriate for the season… floral!

Instead of going with a typical spring palette, I decided to pull out the Beth Ditto floral dress. I wore it a few times in the fall but this is the first time I’ve manged to get pictures! Can you believe it?

Actually, I think that I was wearing it the night the Giant’s qualified for the World Series. The building my classes are in is pretty close to AT&T Park and the roar from the crowd and city was absolutely insane! Naturally, I packed up my stuff and ran to BART so I could get on the train before things got too crazy.

Five Take: Floral

Dress – Beth Ditto for Evans
Leggings – Torrid
Bangles – Torrid
Boots – Dolce Vita for Target
Belt – Torrid

I have a lot of floral clothes. Ugly floral prints hold a special place in my heart but this dress (not ugly) is one of my favorites. After the amazing Beth Ditto navy velvet dress, I had to buy it. If Evans released this style of dress in 20 colors, I’d be very tempted to buy one of each. It is one of the more unique dress constructions that I’ve personally come across for plus sizes – or at the very least, of the dresses I own. The draped panels in the front are amazing! And the best part? They are POCKETS.

Need I say more?

Anyway, I love floral – this has been proven over and over again, so I’ll spare you the gab and post way too many pictures.

Lately I’ve been getting back in the habit of wearing my hair tie on my wrist – as seen above. Sometimes I remember to remove it for pictures but then it gets lost! I probably have 10 packs of stupid hairbands but can never find one when I need it. Which means… hello semi-permanent black bracelet! I left more length in my recent haircut and I’m quite ecstatic that I can pull my hair up again. The small pleasures in life!

Happy Easter to those of you who are celebrating! I’ll be off to dinner with my family where I plan to torture people by orchestrating a family portrait. I just hope it doesn’t rain!

Right now, mine is the only post up but don’t forget to check back and visit Beth, Elizabeth, Monkey and Rebecca, to see their floral outfits!
