OOTD: Nothing to say

I think the last few weeks have finally caught up with me.

Having nothing to say is nothing short of a miracle… or just the culmination of those hectic weeks of non-stop everything.

Words are hard (and apparently my vocabulary is limited), so I’ll give you pictures:

OOTD: Nothing to say

Shirt – Old Navy, 4x
Cardigan – JCPenney, 3x, here.
Skirt – Thrifted and altered.
Flats – Clarks “Book Pump” in pewter, 11M.
Belt – Lane Bryant, 22/24 in orange, here.
Ring – Evans

I feel fine, but my brain needs a break. I think I need some quality craft time.

And I’m going out of state in 10 days. So. Much. To. Do.

What are you doing this weekend?

OOTD: Retail red

I said I wasn’t going to post every Fa(t)shion February outfit here but I figured I’d start the month off with good momentum. But mostly because I wore pants today. I figured that HAS to be blog worthy, right?

I hate pants – really. They’re awkward. If they fit in one place, they don’t fit in another. Even when they do fit, they fall down. I love pockets but if I wear pants… I can’t put anything IN the pockets because of the whole falling down thing. It just exacerbates the situation.

Tunic/dress – Evans, 30/32 UK
Pants – Old Navy, size 30, here.
Cardigan – Old Navy, 3x, via Fatshionista
Belt – Evans
Flats – Clarks “Book Pump” in pewter, 11M.
Necklace – 8th grade graduation gift. And people say I lose things…

That being said, I like the look of pants. You could even say I have pants envy! I want to get in those pants. Yes, those. And yeah… don’t know where I’m going with that. Moving on…

I like pants, just not wearing them. We have a complicated relationship.

The only pants I wear on a semi-regular basis are denim jeggings from Old Navy. And come on, jeggings might look like pants but they feel like pajamas. So when Old Navy came out with these bad boys in cobalt blue and retail red – I couldn’t resist.

Unfortunately, I suck at wearing things when I get them… so the larger sizes are already out of stock. I ended up returning the blue because I figured one pair of rarely worn, ridiculously bright pants was better than two gathering dust.

For my body, the fit is decent. These do not fit like my beloved jeggings – aka they don’t feel like pajamas, but they work well enough. The calves are a little big and the rise is low, both of which usually bother me but RED PANTS, GUYS! I figure I can have the legs fixed by a tailor and the rise isn’t bothering me.

One problem that pants and I have is that most of my closet contains shirts that don’t work with pants. I buy (or chop) shirts to work with high waisted skirts, not pants. I have a couple of tunics and short dresses but they (even this top) feel too long. I can’t win!

But skipping my fat ass happily along in bright red pants is good enough for me.

I wore this outfit to run errands and go to the mall. I had rewards to use at Lane Bryant and figured I’d do that before going out of state. For the most part, I haven’t been shopping because there are a few higher priority things in my life. Plus, saving money is good!

With time to kill, I decided to have some fun trying things on. Of course, I fell in love with a sweater at full price and bought it. Good thing I brought a coupon! This is the second one in a handful of months. Normally 99% of what I buy is on clearance, especially at Lane Bryant.

Guess I’m a sucker for stripey sweaters?

OOTD: Retail red

Yes, those are my clothes thrown all over the floor… not the ones I’m trying!

This sweater is amazing (22/24). It is a very thin knit, but has a great cut and a cute bow tie in back. Which means I’ll be wearing it backwards. There were only a few on the rack and I can’t find it online – so head to your local store ASAP, if you’re interested!

The sequin skirt was very, very tempting. I wish I bought the one at Avenue from a few seasons back but if I cave in for a disco ball butt – this IGIGI sequin skirt is calling my name…

While I was at Lane Bryant, I also tried on their colored denim. It was true to size but too low rise for me. The colors are more subdued but they carry pink, cobalt and teal – plus a few colors in the DKNY line.

I’m loving the current colored denim trend but for my sartorial purposes, tights are a better option. More comfortable too!

Have you embraced colored denim? Is it something you’d try?

Five Take: 1960s

This week for Five Take, our theme was the 1960s. So far, this is the first time we’ve paid homage to a specific time period and it made me a little nervous! There is so much to draw inspiration from. How is a girl to choose?

When I think of this time period, one of the first things that comes to mind is a dress. Surprise, right? I’m talking about a sheath dress. When you think of “mod”, what pops into your mind? For me, it’s a dress shaped something like this:

A simple, classic shape that stands the test of time. In the 60s, there were many, many dresses of a similar style – usually in bright colors, bold patterns or even color blocked.

Turns out that the above doesn’t describe anything in my wardrobe (need to remedy this asap?), so I made it work with what I had in my closet.

Five Take: 1960s

Dress – Avenue, 26/28

Earrings – Vintage screw-post earrings from my grandmother

The 1960s were a turning point for fashion in a variety of ways and it is one of my absolute favorite decades. Mini skirts, go-go boots, short dresses, stripes, bright colors – right up my alley! Unlike other decades, the styles worn changed dramatically from year to year or even based on political affiliations.

I’m from California, people call me a hippie or tree-hugger all the time, does that make me an expert? Maybe my childhood obsession with tie dye and bell bottoms? Probably not.

Five Take: 1960s

Five Take: 1960s

The first dress I planned to wear was a cute black sheath dress with a little twist – but it’s a secret for now! I had planned to get it altered (before this challenge) but it didn’t happen. I’ve been searching high and low for a tailor in the Bay Area without much luck! Found a seamstress who has done plus size clothing/alterations but she couldn’t take anything until February. (Psst, do you know of one?)

I was going to wear the dress anyway because I didn’t remember it being that bad… but oh boy, was I wrong. The result was comical. It turned out looking more like a baggy hospital gown than a sheath dress.

Next up? Classic sheath dress from my closet. This dress is nearly identical to one I wore last month and it’s a very similar outfit too, oops. When thinking of the 60s within the context of my closet I thought bright colors, stripes and the highest pair of boots I own would be the best to pair with this classic silhouette.

Maybe I’m already subconsciously inspired by the 60s? Or in my last minute panic, I went for what’s comfortable and familiar for me. Ding, ding, ding.

Five Take: 1960s

Not there’s anything wrong with that… but I feel like this outfit is a bit of a cop out. I wish I would have planned a bit better this week, so I could push myself into doing something a little different, not back into over well charted territory. But there’s always next week!

Makeup attempt. Someone teach me, quick! Or loan me a pair of steady hands.

After coming out of “vacation” mode… and considering today was my first day back to work, we’re lucky that I didn’t take pictures of 1960s inspired pajamas.

Don’t forget to check out how the others styled their 1960s outfit!

OOTD: First time for everything

Most of the time, I take my own outfit pictures. Just me, my tripod and a remote. The last couple of months, I’ve been doing more shots in public – you know, where people watch you and it can be a little awkward but I’ve gotten used to it.

There are different kinds of people who observe. Most will just glance at me and go on their way, no big deal. Others will slow down and stare – this includes people driving. Hey buddy! Keep your eyes on the road! Some will stop and stare for a while then move on with their lives. But very few people will actually stop and talk to me.

I’ve been asked why I’m taking pictures. There have been jokes about my invisible photographer, discussions about photography, my clothes or sometimes just simple “Hello”.

Nobody has ever offered to help. Strangers anyway – I’ve wrangled friends and family into the chore occasionally. Until today!

I guess there is a first time of everything. The situation was kind of hilarious. Allan walked by then kindly offered to help me out, telling me that he happened to be a photographer and offered his business card in an “I swear I’m not creepy/crazy!” kind of way. Not that I make a habit of meeting strangers on the side of the road… but I made an exception. The sun was setting, the wind was blowing and I was kind of cold!

What are the chances?

This outfit is actually a more comfortable, casual and (more importantly) warm version of what I might wear to the wedding this weekend. I wanted to find a dress but don’t have the time to run around and shop. And we know that I already have plenty of clothes!

I even had the crazy idea to finish one of my sewing projects and wear that. But that is not going to happen, in fact it is even laughable that I thought of it. Finals are only a few weeks away and I’ve already been prepping for them. There isn’t time to sew!

Thankfully Alexys helped me brainstorm a couple of options and I’ll probably end up wearing something like this – the lace skirt, cardigan and a different top with heels. It turns out that I might be videographer for the wedding so wearing a fancy party dress is probably not a good idea. Maybe the heels aren’t either…

Can we say recipe for disaster?
