Five Take: Outerwear

It is that time of the week again – Five Take! Which is also day 20 of the 30 for 30 challenge. This week we are incorporating necessary outerwear – scarves, coats, etc. Thankfully the weather is finally cooperating!

I’m a day late but make sure to visit: Beth, Elizabeth, Monkey and Ms. Loaf, to see their outfits! Unlike me, they have to deal with snow!

Five Take: Necessary Outerwear

Coat, tights, flats – Evans
Scarf – Handknit
Cardigan – Dorothy Perkins
Dress – Avenue
Bangles – Torrid

The red coat is certainly getting worn a lot! On the mild days I prefer it over my wool coats. Less fabric, easier to maneuver and still keeps me warm! Underneath I wore my grey sheath dress with my purple cardigan, though neglected to get a picture. I took these late in the day and was loosing light with every shot!

I started this chartreuse hooded scarf last year to wear at work. The building I worked in at the college was ridiculously cold and the space-heater didn’t help much. It would fry half of my body while the other was still ice cold. Most of the time I wore tights and leggings under my jeans, then layered 2-3 tops and wore a sweatshirt. Sometimes a coat too! I got into the habit of also wrapping a scarf around my face but even with the hood of the sweatshirt up, my head and neck were still cold!

I finished the scarf in February but it took me nine months to sew in the ends and put buttons on. Now I can wear it!

Adding pins to a coat or wearing a cute scarf are two of the easiest ways to dress up your outerwear. A few years ago, I started collecting vintage pins and during the winter I like to cluster them on the collar or lapel of my coat for a little something extra. The only problem I’ve ran into is that I tend to snag them on my sleeve or scarves. I haven’t had a chance to put one on my red coat yet but I will remedy that soon!

With the mild, sometimes rainy winters of the San Francisco Bay area – I have it pretty easy when it comes to outerwear. As long as I am reasonably waterproof, have an umbrella and shoes that don’t slip… I’m happy! The lowest temperatures we’ve had so far this year were in the mid 20s (Fahrenheit).

What do you do to stay both cute and warm? Or does warmth take priority over fashion?

She’s crafty: Call me crazy

This blog was intended to be more of a lifestyle blog than strictly fashion but it hasn’t really worked out that way. Guess you can tell how it has consumed me! I used to have time to do other hobbies which have gotten pushed aside for internetting (totally a word), blogging and online shopping. Oh, don’t forget homework!

I used to knit, spin, dye, craft, cook/bake for fun, read books that weren’t part of a class, played video games and a bunch of other stuff that I just don’t have time for anymore. Or things I want to learn like sewing and weaving. I’m trying to find more time for fiber arts. Part of it might be because I have 150+ pounds of wool/yarn in the house just waiting to be used… but that is just a rumor! It might be more.

To jump start this endeavor, I’ve decided to knit a few things for Christmas. I had already decided that my siblings don’t deserve Christmas presents – but I might change my mind if time allows. They have big feet – it uses more yarn!

I’ll be knitting slippers similar to these that I wore on day 1 of 30 for 30:

Slippers

They have been well received in the past, are relatively easy and knit up quickly. And free – because I have plenty of materials. They are a great project for my commute! I think I could crank out one slipper every 2 hours – though it might take me a few to get back there. Now I have to go find my supplies! Only… 36 days to go!

Each year, without fail, I think “I’m not crafting anything this year for Christmas” then end up changing my mind between Halloween and Christmas. I try to resist! I really do.

Do you have any hobbies you wish you had more time for? Things you quit but wish you had continued? Is there anything you want to learn to do or make? If you’re making gifts for the holidays, I’d love to see them!
