FFFW: The beginning

My trip to New York City and Full Figured Fashion week was fantastic. The Big Apple, fabulous fatty friends and lots of fashion. What’s not to love? I’m going to do a series of posts about the trip… because there is too much for just one!

I can’t believe that it has been over two weeks since I’ve been home. The day after I got back, we had a friend from New Zealand arrive to stay with us for a week AND my accelerated, online semester started. After that, my body decided enough was enough – I’d had my fun and now it was time to get sick! Perfect timing, right?

FFFW Packing

Two bags, six days, day/night events = lots of outfits.

FFFW - Closet after packing

Closet aftermath, post packing. To be honest, I’m still trying to organize it… cough, cough.

The Monday before I left, I was procrastinating to the extreme. I had an idea of what I was bringing, clothes laid out on the bed, etc. but nothing was really packed IN THE BAG. My flight was paid for, the hotel was booked and I had saved plenty of money for shopping but in the weeks leading up to the event… it just didn’t feel real.

Normally when I travel, I obsessively plan my outfits to be efficient and “maximize my packing space”. My methods for FFFW were a mess. I threw a couple haphazard outfits together, put in some new pieces (dangerous) and added a few extras, just in case.

Also, I found out a reason to own a scale – being able to weigh your bag. Yes, not for me… for my bag!

After I threw everything in the bag, it was around 2am… and we had been talking about getting up at 4am. Ouch. I just barely made my flight that boarded at 6:31am. A huge, huge THANK YOU to the woman who let me on the plane. The very last person, at the very last minute. If she had a bad morning… I think my trip would have started off differently.

I arrived in NYC around 11am, and made my very first “big city” mistake by getting into one of those “sketchy” cabs. A group of girls had employed his friend, so I figured, what the heck. Rookie mistake. Stick with the yellow cabs. Obviously it turned out just fine. I wish I could blame my poor judgement on my lack of sleep…

Plane over NYC Manhattan

Left: View from the plane just before landing at JFK. Right: Exit sign for Manhattan on the drive to the hotel.

But he took me for a surprisingly peaceful drive on that rainy afternoon, through some less busy streets of Manhattan and ultimately to the hotel, where I got to meet Rebecca for the first time! My FFFW roomie and (patient) photographer for the remainder of my time in NYC.

Rebecca and I met in the lobby, hugged (yeah, I’m one of those) and got down to business – getting in the room after a long day of traveling! Since we arrived a night early, we started off in a smaller room that wasn’t part of the event block, and swapped the next day.

I have to admit that I was a little nervous meeting Rebecca (since we were stuck together for a week!) and other bloggers. Meeting people that you know from the internet isn’t always what you think. I try to be as “me” as possible in online spaces, but it just isn’t the same as knowing someone in person. Especially when you have to share a bathroom!

Luckily, everything was great! We talked easily and comfortably, like old friends. One of the reasons why I love Rebecca’s blog is because her way with words always strike me as genuine and honest. Plus, I’d love to raid her closet…

King Kong, for $19.95! Kind of creepy…

Taking on the world

I loved their sign, “I’m out taking on the world”.

By time we got in the room, a nap was very tempting, but we chatted for a bit then decided to explore part of the city. And by explore I mean… go shopping.

We walked over to Macy’s on 34th street, a serious shopping mecca. So many floors of retail heaven… and people! There was an entire floor dedicated to plus sizes. I don’t think we even made it through the whole thing before heading to the changing rooms. I brought in 20+ pieces of clothing to try on, but nothing that I loved enough to buy. We both walked out empty-handed. Shocking, I know!

Rebecca had the foresight to bring an umbrella and attempted to share but I embraced the fact that I was going to get wet and went without. We popped in a F21 nearby, but they didn’t have plus sizes. At that point, it was pouring. I was soaked, my dress was hanging and I looked like a drowned something-or-other. On the way back, we passed Old Navy and I walked in, praying they had an umbrella in June.

I found the very last one and bought it. Then we made our way back to the hotel for a well-deserved nap and dinner. I will say that Manhattan has very good Cobb salads.

Stay turned to hear about the rest of my trip! I’ve been trying to dig myself out of this mountain of homework.

In a New York minute

As an Andorid user, Instagram is my new obsession. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably know that… and have probably seen some (or all) of these already – sorry!

My trip to Full Figured Fashion Week has been absolutely amazing. It was so great to meet other bloggers, industry leaders, designers and so many wonderful people from all over the world. But especially Rebecca from The Plus Side Of Me; Olivia from Wait Until The Sunset, her fiance Ben and Jen, the fantastic designer behind Cult of California. Meeting and hanging out with them totally made my week!

Tonight I head back home to Texas, but I thought I’d do a quick recap of the trip with Instagram photos.

Some of these photos are from Rebecca and Olivia. Make sure to check them out! Lots of exciting New York/FFFW posts are in the works.

I have plenty more to talk about and outfit shots to post once I’m back in Texas. That is, after I catch up on sleep!

It’s been fun NYC, but I’m ready to go home!

A dream day

A dream day, but most definitely not a day dream. An important distinction – but it sure felt like one. That morning, I got up, excited for the day ahead. Work came and went, you know, business as usual but the afternoon is what I eagerly waited for.

An invitation. Unexpected, thrilling, exciting but also intimidating and yet so full of potential… I accepted. I was worried. Could I make it on time? Would there be traffic? Would it be pouring rain? Do I know where I’m going? What the hell am I doing? Would it go well?

Last week, I was invited to meet with Yuliya Raquel, founder and head designer of IGIGI, at their office in San Francisco. I was (am) thrilled, honored and also thankful – for the opportunity and the timing

It was amazing. Time flew by. I didn’t even realize – until I was walking out, that I was there for over three hours. Don’t worry, I have some pictures to show you. Lots of pictures.

Patterns
Patterns galore!

Fabric!
So many beautiful fabrics.

First I started out talking with Yuliya and Giulietta – about fashion, plus size fashion, self acceptance, beauty, inspiration and things to come. Followed by a tour of the office. I met Yuliya, but also the team that works with her to bring the clothing to life, and to us. Quite literally, because the stock and shipping departments are in-house!

From concept to reality – all under one roof. And remarkably, all IGIGI garments are made in San Francisco, sewn by manufacturers all within 10 miles of their office.

Down to the basement! What’s in here?

The time went by so quickly. I was blown away by the kindness shown to me but also the passion behind the IGIGI brand to truly change plus size fashion – and the world, for the better.

Stock room. Can you guys tell I love this dress?

Inspiration
Lots of trims, buttons and other embellishments.

After the tour, I was able to try on some of my favorite IGIGI dresses and a few suggested by Yuliya. Complete with accessories from their stash of props. These shoes are no joke! I can’t believe models do this for hours on end. Give me flats or a “sensible” heel any day.

Finished!
All done!

I didn’t think the day could get any better – but it did. IGIGI offered to dress me (!!!) for some of the Full Figured Fashion Week events in June and let me bring home the Vintage Floral and Daphne Wrap dresses for the trip.

The last few pictures are a little blurry, but I couldn’t resist showing you the Naomi dress because… I bought it. The last one they had in stock! I’ve been drooling over this dress since it came out – or the white version (wedding dress), both are gorgeous.

Seeing it in person just sent me over the edge – or off the deep end, depending on your perspective. It has been a few days and usually my buyers remorse kicks in by now. Impractical for my life? A little bit. But I will definitely be wearing it to Full Figured Fashion Week. I decided that I might not have opportunities to wear this dress right now, I’ll just have to create them. ;)

Thank you Yuliya, Giulietta, Ozlem and everyone at IGIGI for a truly amazing day.

This post is already long enough – I’ll show you what I wore to visit IGIGI later!

Here is a sneak peek:
