OOTD: Seeing spots

Last night I decided to attempt using soft curlers. Short hair, particularly an a-line haircut, makes it an interesting experience. Here are the results, straight out of the curlers and after combing them out:

Curls: Before Curls: After

At first I was a little skeptical about the super curly hair. Despite how terrible the curlers were (slick material, poor design) they worked well enough. They were a pain in the ass to put in my hair when following the directions, so I ended up inventing my own way. The front turned out great but the back was a mess.

When I woke up two of the curlers were laying on the bed, despite my attempts to stay in one position all night. Usually I flip flop around and find the cold side of the pillow but I resisted. It was torture! But yeah, the back was too short to put in rollers easily. At least without some help!

I was tempted to take a shower and wash them out but decided to rock curls for the day. I didn’t put any product in my hair before or after using the rollers. Usually my hair does not hold a curl AT ALL. I can spend hours with a curling iron, a couple bottles of hairspray and it will fall out 10 minutes after I walk out of the bathroom. This was an important test.

My little public service announcement of the day: Don’t underestimate the power of new to you, but used clothing.

Years ago, I kind of thought it was gross but have since changed my mind. Consider me enlightened. Hot water, elbow grease and soap goes a long way. If not, the loss won’t break the bank.

When it comes to a favorite method of buying used clothing, it is a toss up between buying clothes from others via selling communities/blogs and thrifting. I also buy things on eBay but the others have their merits. The downside of the internet, of course, is that you don’t get to try things on. But I’ve been into a few gross thrift stores… so the in-store experience isn’t something I treasure. The difference is being able to try things on and inspect the garment for damage and stains.

Buying on these communities is a little different. I’ve bought and sold over on the Fatshionista LiveJournal community which has exiled sales posts to Fatshionexchange, for over two years now and it has changed both how I shop AND how much I spend. One of my favorite things about it is buying clothes I’ve seen people wear in the community – like scoring one of Lesley’s dresses. Is that creepy? Many of us don’t always have a network of friends to exchange or swap clothes in real life, so this has been a great experience for me.

I’ve purchased a lot of fantastic clothing from other fats – like this dress! I recently snagged a few great pieces from Eryn when she was cleaning out her closet and couldn’t wait to wear them. Thanks Eryn! I love the texture of the swiss dot fabric, so much that I can’t stop touching myself when wearing the dress. That uh, sounds wrong… Moving on!

Usually, I’m more of a winter girl but these last few months have been pretty awful and I’m ready for a change! I’m looking forward to spring – wearing cotton sundresses, cute cardigans, sandals and more importantly – being able to go bare legged. This morning it was beautiful outside, so I figured why not?

Big mistake. Looks are deceiving and by time I was ready to leave the house, the sun was shining bright but it was about 50 degrees. I also forgot about my problem with this style of dress and the lesson I’ve learned in previous years – always wear a camisole. When I put the dress on, it was decent. Over time, the dress stretches a bit and I end up showing more boob than intended. Oops! After washing, the dress goes back to normal and tries to trick me again.

It is a vicious cycle.

Excessive pictures with my daffodil. I found it on the grass in the backyard – maybe one of the raccoons picked it for me? And there is the back of my hair, told you it was a mess! These pictures were taken about 6 hours after I took the curls out – after cleaning the house, errands, two craft stores and prepping for dinner. I’ve had them up in a ponytail for most of the evening and they are still going strong. I’m impressed.

Speaking of clothes… if you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, there is a swap in the works for April! Get more info over here. Hope to see you there!

What are you looking forward to this spring?

Out with the old, in with the new!

Fireworks

Happy New Year! 2010 was a great year for me in some things, not so much for others. Either way, why dwell on the past when you can look to the future?

I’m not one for making resolutions. Like, rules – they are made for breaking… but there are a few things I hope to accomplish this year.

365 Attempt: 2010

In 2010, I attempted the 365 project – taking a self portrait each day for a year. Around the middle of May, I lost steam and stopped. This year I plan to take one picture a day with no limitations. I hope it will help inspire me to push myself to be more creative with my photography and expand my horizons. More about that later!

Having a creative outlet is really important to me. When things get stressful – hobbies and things like eating or sleeping tend to get pushed aside. In 2010, I’d like to continue to make things. My crafting mojo is slowly but surely coming back. Re-discovering my love for fiber arts (knitting/crochet/spinning) would be nice but learning to sew is also at the top of my list! The Book Arts class I took this semester has definitely inspired me to explore that avenue as well.

The big one? Organization. This will be difficult, most likely achieved in baby steps and probably will never live up to my dream. I have too much stuff to be completely organized. The past two years I have thrown away so much, yet it seems endless!

Good luck in the new year!

OOTD: Better late than never!

Folks, I have a problem. Apparently I have an issue posting things in a timely matter. It feels like I always have a couple of outfit posts in the queue and never catch up. Oh well! With school now in session, it is only bound to get worse! Though I am definitely happier and use my time more efficiently with a full schedule.

Better late than never. Right?

A couple weeks ago Annissa and I went to Cupcakes and Muffintops 2.0. Which I talked about here. I’m not entirely sure why it has taken me so long to post this, but at some point in the last month I did lose my camera cord… so let’s blame it on that!

Another Avenue dress! Shocking, I know. These things are like crack to me. No joke. Comfy, cotton and easy. What’s not to love? Most of the day I wore my new pair of Sanitas but by late afternoon they were killing me. Probably not the best idea to do a lot of walking in new shoes. The thing I love about these dresses is that they can be dressed up or down and even transition well into fall/winter. I’ve worn mine all year round! Then again, California weather… I actually wore this dress to a wedding in July with some different accessories and a brown pair of lace-up wedges. Nothing but a couple of blurry photos, unfortunately. My companions had a little too much to drink at the open bar!

I picked up a few things from Cupcakes and Muffintops which I originally planned to incorporate into this post but forgot (until now, go me)! The sequin and lace dresses will have to wait for their debut.
