Five Take: Sheer

It is time for another round of Five Take… this week, our challenge is sheer. I love the look of sheer clothing but sometimes struggle to wear it on my top half. Most of my pieces are polyester, or require a tank underneath. More layers in the heat and humidity is not ideal!

If you’re new, here’s what Five Take is about:

The idea behind Five Take is pretty simple. One theme, five people… resulting in five different looks. The only restriction is having to shop from our closets. Sounds easy enough, right?

This week, I went a little outside my comfort zone and wore a shirt that is basically sheer, with no tank underneath. It isn’t really obvious in the pictures, but I am pasty white, so that (literally) glows through this super sheer, slub tee from H&M+.

Five Take: Sheer

Top – H&M+, 3x
Skirt – Avenue, 28
Shoes – Dansko
Necklace – F21
Bangles – Torrid

Saturday I tagged along with my friend Julie to help photograph my very first wedding. It was so much fun! I’ve always found the idea of being a wedding photographer intriguing but haven’t had the opportunity. For friends and family? Yes. But as the real deal? No. After several hours taking pictures, filling up all my cards with hundreds of images, I returned home close to 1am with very sore feet. Then proceeded to not sleep until 3am. Go me.

After getting up for work this morning, I didn’t think Five Take was going to happen. I was tired didn’t manage to get a whole lot done after my shift but… sometimes a girl needs a break!

I didn’t want to venture out of the apartment today but we needed groceries and ended up grabbing dinner. Lazy Sunday, random clothes. I was going for a casual look, but with the skirt/necklace choice and unnecessary heels… whatever. It was a t-shirt and heels kind of day?

I’m trying to wear all of my “special” shoes to decide which ones get to stay and which will go. Hard decisions ahead! It is a small miracle that I haven’t killed myself walking down the stairs from our 2nd story apartment… yet. Knock on wood?

Five Take: Sheer

You might have noticed that this top is from the H&M+ line. Yes, I finally made it to one that has it! The store they opened nearby is massive, but the plus line only has a couple of racks. The store had only been open for a week or so when we checked it out, but the plus size selections had been picked over. Oddly enough, the rest of the store looked pretty well stocked, but the plus section was sad and (almost) empty.

Most of the offerings were very basic. Neutral cardigans, over-sized tops, and a few styles of awkward linen/cotton, elastic waistband, capri pants… I still don’t understand those. There were a few brighter pieces – a floral dress (made out of shiny polyester with a weird cut), a purple tank with orange straps (they tried?) and a couple of loose weave, metallic sweaters.

I picked up a couple of the tops to try. Some of them had interesting construction, but did not fit my boobs. Which wasn’t a surprise, considering the line tops at a 24 and from what I’ve read, runs small. This top was one of the two pieces that came home with me. It is made from a rough, slub fabric that is sheer, but in a… mysterious way?

My 50mm f/1.4 came back from Canon, so I’m back to taking outfit shots again. It seemed to work fine at the wedding, but judging from this set of outfit pictures… I’ll have to send it back.

The images are lacking the normal clarity and sharpness that I’m accustomed to, so something is up. Sure, they look dreamy and artsy, but that isn’t really my style. I have no use for an expensive paperweight!

You might think I’m crazy, but I actually cropped/sharpened the pictures for the blog, so these smaller resolution files look decent. Fingers crossed that they get it right the 2nd go around!

Sheer clothing has been a really strong trend for several seasons. Blouses, dresses, skirts… brights, neutrals, you name it – you can probably find it! I’ve been lusting over sheer blouses, especially in bright colors with great details. I love the bright chiffon skirts that are popping up everywhere too, but I already have a few.

I think I’m the first (shocking, I know) to post the challenge this week… but I’ll link up to the others as they go up! Make sure to check them out, this isn’t one you want to miss.

Are there any sheer pieces that you’re dying to add to your wardrobe this summer?

Five Take: Belts

After a short break, we’re back with Five Take! The idea behind Five Take is pretty simple. One theme, five people… resulting in five different looks. The only restriction is having to shop from our closets. Sounds easy enough, right?

Lately I’ve been stressed – school, work, missing home and my family… besides, July is not exactly my favorite month. Which I’ll get into later… but it is nice to get back to blogging with a challenge that is right up my alley – belts!

Five Take: Belts

Shirt – Ross, 1x
Skirt – Vintage, via Cupcakes and Muffintops
Cardigan – Talbots, 2x
Shoes – Clarks, 11
Belt – Talbots, 2x

Belts are my favorite accessory. I’m a belt junkie. I have WAY too many. They can be functional or decorative, add a pop of color, change a shirt into a dress, help with “fit” and much more.

I’ve come full circle – from not wearing belts, thinking I couldn’t wear them… to wearing them with everything. And now, I’m actively trying to avoid the knee-jerk reaction to belt, belt, belt. I only succeed half the time, but that’s okay.

One thing I’ve learned is that a belt can be a great accessory, but it is just another styling tool, and not necessary for every outfit. The most common reasons I wear a belt are – for a pop of color or “fit”.

I’ve been dying to wear this (ridiculously expensive, just a warning) cardigan from Talbots that I got on a shopping trip with my friend Julie a few weeks ago. Today it was unseasonably cool, so I thought I’d wear it over a simple black base, to highlight the sweater, and drove to matchy town with the shoes, belt and lipstick.

I’ve gone the way of the Land’s End dress with these belts – I picked up multiple colors in their summer sale. Non-elastic, patent leather belts in bright colors? Kryptonite.

Tonight Chris and I went out for dinner with one of his long time friends. Our companions said it was their first double date as a couple – ours too! Actually, I was informed that we’re apparently “past dating”. Should that end since we’ve lived together for a handful of months? Hmmm… debatable!

Since our outing went well past sunset, we tried to think of a place that had enough light to take pictures for today’s post. I broke my flash on the 4th of July (first a lens, now the flash, what’s next?) and there aren’t too many places to take pictures after dark!

Five Take: Belts

Nearby there is a parking garage that seemed pretty well lit, but taking pictures in public spaces after dark is kind of risky – especially in Texas. Which turned out to be true. A security guard approached us and asked what we were doing, but was surprisingly nice about it. I think he would have given us a few minutes to finish up but both of us felt kind of guilty and left.

It is a shame, the lighting was pretty good!

My favorite belts have always been the 2″, elastic variety. One problem I have with elastic belts is that they migrate. No matter what, the belt moves up until it is what my brother deemed a “boob belt”. Thanks Mitch!

As I got more comfortable, I started experimenting with more non-elastic belts but they can be difficult to find in plus sizes, especially in bright colors (my favorite). I have less “migration problems” with traditional belts because I can tighten them up. When the skinny belt became a trend, I wasn’t sure it would work for my shape because as belts do… they move up and skinny belts have a tendency to disappear. Poof!

Moving and my ever-changing sartorial preferences have made me realize that I’ve outgrown my collection of belts. I used to alternate through many, but now I stick with a handful of favorites.

Looking to start (or augment) your own collection? Here are a few of my favorite places:

Torrid – elastic/non-elastic, styles and colors vary, sizes 1-5
Re/Dress – elastic belts, black and 4 colors, one size (works best for 2x-4x)
Fashion To Figure – very similar (if not identical to Re/Dress), several colors available, one size
Talbots – various fashion elastic/non-elastic belts, some leather, 1x-3x
Target – XXL belts can be surprisingly stretchy

And of course… always check out the thrift store, if that’s your thing! I have a few that are fantastic. The 80s was a great time for elastic belts with amazing buckles. You can even replace the elastic if it is worn out or gross – I’ve done it.

Check out how the other Five Take ladies wore their belts:

FFFW: The beginning

My trip to New York City and Full Figured Fashion week was fantastic. The Big Apple, fabulous fatty friends and lots of fashion. What’s not to love? I’m going to do a series of posts about the trip… because there is too much for just one!

I can’t believe that it has been over two weeks since I’ve been home. The day after I got back, we had a friend from New Zealand arrive to stay with us for a week AND my accelerated, online semester started. After that, my body decided enough was enough – I’d had my fun and now it was time to get sick! Perfect timing, right?

FFFW Packing

Two bags, six days, day/night events = lots of outfits.

FFFW - Closet after packing

Closet aftermath, post packing. To be honest, I’m still trying to organize it… cough, cough.

The Monday before I left, I was procrastinating to the extreme. I had an idea of what I was bringing, clothes laid out on the bed, etc. but nothing was really packed IN THE BAG. My flight was paid for, the hotel was booked and I had saved plenty of money for shopping but in the weeks leading up to the event… it just didn’t feel real.

Normally when I travel, I obsessively plan my outfits to be efficient and “maximize my packing space”. My methods for FFFW were a mess. I threw a couple haphazard outfits together, put in some new pieces (dangerous) and added a few extras, just in case.

Also, I found out a reason to own a scale – being able to weigh your bag. Yes, not for me… for my bag!

After I threw everything in the bag, it was around 2am… and we had been talking about getting up at 4am. Ouch. I just barely made my flight that boarded at 6:31am. A huge, huge THANK YOU to the woman who let me on the plane. The very last person, at the very last minute. If she had a bad morning… I think my trip would have started off differently.

I arrived in NYC around 11am, and made my very first “big city” mistake by getting into one of those “sketchy” cabs. A group of girls had employed his friend, so I figured, what the heck. Rookie mistake. Stick with the yellow cabs. Obviously it turned out just fine. I wish I could blame my poor judgement on my lack of sleep…

Plane over NYC Manhattan

Left: View from the plane just before landing at JFK. Right: Exit sign for Manhattan on the drive to the hotel.

But he took me for a surprisingly peaceful drive on that rainy afternoon, through some less busy streets of Manhattan and ultimately to the hotel, where I got to meet Rebecca for the first time! My FFFW roomie and (patient) photographer for the remainder of my time in NYC.

Rebecca and I met in the lobby, hugged (yeah, I’m one of those) and got down to business – getting in the room after a long day of traveling! Since we arrived a night early, we started off in a smaller room that wasn’t part of the event block, and swapped the next day.

I have to admit that I was a little nervous meeting Rebecca (since we were stuck together for a week!) and other bloggers. Meeting people that you know from the internet isn’t always what you think. I try to be as “me” as possible in online spaces, but it just isn’t the same as knowing someone in person. Especially when you have to share a bathroom!

Luckily, everything was great! We talked easily and comfortably, like old friends. One of the reasons why I love Rebecca’s blog is because her way with words always strike me as genuine and honest. Plus, I’d love to raid her closet…

King Kong, for $19.95! Kind of creepy…

Taking on the world

I loved their sign, “I’m out taking on the world”.

By time we got in the room, a nap was very tempting, but we chatted for a bit then decided to explore part of the city. And by explore I mean… go shopping.

We walked over to Macy’s on 34th street, a serious shopping mecca. So many floors of retail heaven… and people! There was an entire floor dedicated to plus sizes. I don’t think we even made it through the whole thing before heading to the changing rooms. I brought in 20+ pieces of clothing to try on, but nothing that I loved enough to buy. We both walked out empty-handed. Shocking, I know!

Rebecca had the foresight to bring an umbrella and attempted to share but I embraced the fact that I was going to get wet and went without. We popped in a F21 nearby, but they didn’t have plus sizes. At that point, it was pouring. I was soaked, my dress was hanging and I looked like a drowned something-or-other. On the way back, we passed Old Navy and I walked in, praying they had an umbrella in June.

Rebecca and I on 7th Avenue!

I found the very last one and bought it. Then we made our way back to the hotel for a well-deserved nap and dinner. I will say that Manhattan has very good Cobb salads.

Stay turned to hear about the rest of my trip! I’ve been trying to dig myself out of this mountain of homework.
