Five Take: Nautical

The idea behind Five Take is pretty simple. One theme, five people… resulting in five different looks. The only restriction is having to shop from our closets. Sounds easy enough, right?

This week, our theme was nautical. This is actually our second Five Take with nautical, you can check out my outfit from last year here.

I have to confess that I am not too enthusiastic about today’s outfit… but hit or miss, I’ll always show the outfits to you! I had something in mind that worked better but in my flurry of packing… the necessary items got put in a box.

Five Take: Nautical

Top – Old Navy, 4X
Skirt – Land’s End, size 26
Leggings – Avenue, 26/28
Flats – Evans
Necklace – My grandma’s
Lipstick – MAC, Lady Bug

Speaking of boxes? I’ve been filling lots of them. Yup, it is crunch time! Next week, at this exact time, I’ll be headed out of California, with Chris and all of my worldly possessions to my new home in Texas. Exciting!

It might be a little quiet around here for the next few weeks as I finish packing. We leave California May 6th, arrive in Texas the 9th and our move-in is the 15th.

Five Take: Nautical

Today I went to go visit a childhood friend before I leave. We’ve been friends since the second grade, when I moved to the city I grew up in. There are some people in my life that I can go ages without seeing, but when we get together, it is like no time has passed. It is like that with her!

The outfit itself is pretty basic – an old top, this new-ish skirt from Land’s End clearance, capri leggings, worn out flats and my favorite necklace (also the only one that isn’t packed away, ha!). The leggings were necessary. I’ve learned the hard way to sew down the button placket or wear shorts. Otherwise bad things happen.

I swear this looked better when I walked out of the house this morning… but the shirt stretched as time went on and looked sloppy by the end of the day. Not my favorite. I wore it tucked in all day, but thought to see if untucking (and folding under) the shirt would improve anything… nope. Oh well!

Five Take: Nautical

I’ve kind of fallen in love with Land’s End. Yeah, I know. I can’t explain it but my taste (and style) is veering toward more classic, timeless items (and also higher quality). Which is fantastic for remix potential, but not too exciting otherwise. After glancing through their spring/summer catalog, I saw a lot of nautical inspired pieces too. I picked this chambray skirt up on clearance ($10!) to try out their sizing.

I even bought (half of) my summer swim suit from Land’s End. Despite reviews saying that some of their swim bottoms ran small… I had no problems getting the size 26 on my butt. Which is interesting because swimsuits are usually just as bad (or worse) than a pair of Spanx. All that power netting, tummy control… “put this on and look 10lbs lighter!” crap.

Oh yeah, my summer swim suit is a fatkini. AWW YEAH! I’ll need to invest in some serious SPF(and aloe) because my lily white stomach has not seen the sun in many years. And if burns on other sensitive places are any indication – a burn on my tummy will hurt like hell.

After we move in, one of the first things I plan to do is hit the pool… so hopefully I can take pictures soon!

Mt. Diablo

One of my brother’s told me I looked like a bumble bee, and a couple of other disparaging comments. He is quite vocal about (my) sartorial choices when he has no room to talk!

I’m sure that Mitch (another brother) is bummed that this is the last set of outfit pictures he will be taking for me… but not really.

OOTD: Dinosaur Hill

In the theme of “visiting my favorite places before the move”, I’ve been taking a tour of some of my favorite (photo) spots. Maybe where I take outfit pictures, where I go to relax, or great places for photo walks – it varies!

Dinosaur Hill

One of those spots is a park called Dinosaur Hill. I still remember the first time I came here in pre-school. I’m not kidding! My mother would (and does) question my memory. We made kites from paper plates and took a field trip up here to fly them. I don’t remember much beyond that…

Since moving to this city, I visit often to walk around and de-stress… but also for photo shoots – including one at dawn for a class assignment.

Contemplation

My brother wants to know when he’s going to get paid for this…

All I remember about that day is leaving at 4am to pick up my friend/helper who lived nearby, driving 45 minutes to pick up my brother (the model above, and kite flyer), then driving BACK to the city I started in. Only to have a bike with a flat tire (lol), being in the cold (April), rolling around in the mud (how do you think I got that shot?) and realizing that I forgot my tripod… for a sunrise shoot. Where like, time is of the essence and stuff.

Pretty awesome. I even took OOTD’s there before I started this blog:

Not much to say about this one. Just another outfit, for another day of packing and running errands. I got fed up with everything and headed to the yarn store for some “quality” fiber time, so I threw this outfit on. I ended up buying cashmere yarn ($$$) with little hesitation, which is an indication of my stress level at the time.

Bonus is – my knitting mojo has re-appeared and I might actually have something finished soon. YAY!

I love this shirt – sequins, cutouts, embroidery – but I’m afraid to wash it.

OOTD: A dream day

This is a follow up to my IGIGI visit a few weeks ago (has it already been that long!?). There was just too much to put in one post!

So, my visit to IGIGI was amazing. If you read the other post, you know that. Now it is a few several days after and I still feel like it wasn’t quite real.

On top of such a great day, I got to spend time in San Francisco. Which reminds me of the best piece of moving advice given to me (so far) – visit all of your favorite places.

San Francisco is my favorite city in the world. Okay, okay… I’ve done some traveling – not nearly enough but (for now?) it is the city of my soul. There is just something about being in San Francisco that makes my heart beat a little faster. The sights, the sounds, the people… speaking of – do I sound crazy? Maybe. I just love it. Fact.

Visiting a few of my favorite places in the city while I was there seemed like a no-brainer.

Funny thing is, I don’t live there. I’ve never lived there. Not for lack of wanting to live there – I have that. Just not the money to do so. It is too expensive! I live across the Bay – 45 minutes, maybe an hour, depending on traffic. So why, this city, of all cities? I’m not sure I even know the answer.

The day was like a dream. First at IGIGI, then wandering around San Francisco for the rest of the evening. A dream I’ve had to live in THE city, hell, a city. Somewhere other than the suburbia I grew up in. Which I love too, but in a different way and some day – maybe I’d move to a similar place but (hopefully) after experiencing something different.

OOTD: A dream day

I left IGIGI around 5pm, and took these pictures on my way back to the car. I actually propped/hung up the camera on an iron gate to an apartment building. Some guy with headphones on came walking down my little alleyway… and of course, that was his door. Doh!

It didn’t phase him one bit. I managed to get the camera strap untangled before he reached the door, he said thanks, opened the door and went upstairs. No glance, no comment, no smirk. Maybe San Francisco is my city?

Anyway, “quitting time” means traffic – lots of it, particularly if you’re heading out of the city. I headed over to the Embarcaerdo to have dinner at one of my favorite lunch spots – the Pier 23 Cafe (watch out lady butts (seriously) ahead!)

My mom first introduced me to this place a few years ago, so I guess that is part of why it is special. Live music, candlelight, good food. What more could a girl ask for? I guess a dinner companion but I kind of wanted to be by myself. Oddly enough, I’ve never been to dinner by myself? It felt great!

I wasn’t the only one with the idea – a woman brought a book, ordered dinner and a glass of wine, and sat down nearby to enjoy the music. I took a little walk after dinner, and it started to rain as the sun was setting. Not really dressed for the weather, I headed back to the car and eventually, home.

Crappy picture of inside Pier 23.

How awesome is this dress? Aside from the wrinkles, that is. I picked it up last spring for a song and proceeded to tell all my friends to buy one. Coral? Cut outs? Yes, please. Occasionally the catalogs have a gem.

I’ve worn this dress to school a few times over the last year but never got a picture of it. Can you believe that? I wore a pair of navy tights too but didn’t put them back on after the epic dress-up session at IGIGI.

I can’t get enough of cut out details after finding my first piece thrifting a few years ago. I’m glad that they are “on trend” again, which increases my chances of finding something in my size – thrifted or bought.

What is your favorite city or place to visit? Do you like the cut out trend?

Five Take: Maxi Dress v2

The idea behind Five Take is pretty simple. One theme, five people… resulting in five different looks. The only restriction is having to shop from our closets. Sounds easy enough, right?

This week, our challenge was a maxi dress. When we did this theme last year, it was my first time wearing one.

I guess you can say I got over my misgivings. Since then, I’ve added a “few” to my wardrobe.

I wouldn’t say that maxi dresses (and skirts) are my favorite type of clothing, but they are turning out to be extremely versatile. I can wear one as pajamas, in the summer, in the winter, layered… really, there are a lot of ways. My favorite is pajamas, haha.

My maxi skirts and dresses have taken me through winter, and the transition into spring… but the last few days we’ve been hovering around 90°F. When packing up my clothes, I found a couple of my summer dresses, like this blue number, and thought about giving it a spin.

After reading 100% cotton on the tag, it was inevitable.

I spent the day out at my parents’ house for the neighborhood garage sale. Since I didn’t actually bring anything it was more to spend some time with my family before the move. I was up at 5:30 am to get out there early – no makeup, no accessories. I did have to go dig up a pair of sandals. I thought I could get away with flats until May (it has been raining) but they looked silly.

91°F today, thunderstorms and almost 30°F cooler on Wednesday. The weather needs to make up its mind!
