OOTD: Christmas Eve

Christmas has come and gone. As much as I usually love the season… this year I’m glad it’s over! I didn’t even decorate my tree until a few days before Christmas because the ornaments were “lost” in the garage. But I am looking forward to the new year!

On Christmas Eve, my father’s side of the family has a very large get-together. My dad is one of seven kids. I think we’re up to 30 something grandchildren and 7+ great-grandchildren, most of whom attend. Who can keep count? But it definitely makes for a very lively and loud party!

This year, I was fortunate enough to have my boyfriend Chris visiting for the holiday and he helped me snap these pictures after the party. He’s too chicken smart to allow me to post his picture (or the ones of us) on the internet but oh well! Consider yourselves spared of cutesy stuff. My holiday gift to you!

OOTD: Christmas Eve

Tunic/dress: Angel Ribbons via Simply Be, here, size 28
Jeggings – Old Navy, size 28
Coat – Old Navy, seen below, 4x
Boots – Fitzwell, “Syrup” via 6pm.com
Necklace – Christmas gift from my boyfriend
Bracelet – Style & Co from Macy’s.

I had planned on doing over-the-top fancy outfits for the holidays… but things have been manic. Instead, I opted for something comfortable and warm, but festive. Lately, I’m placing “fancy” on the back burner, more and more. When I’m busy… I just grab clothes out of the closet and do the best I can!

This lace “dress” from Simply Be is a true, bright red and naturally, I thought it would be perfect for Christmas. The lighting/late night pictures made it virtually impossible to color correct… so take my word for it? Lace is one of my favorite details, but for a klutz like me – it can be dangerous. Everything gets snagged! This lace is very delicate and open, so you have to be careful.

When this dress was first released, I swear it was available in two lengths. Anyone else see that? I missed out on the first round but it was brought back. Yay!

At 5’6″- apparently I’m of average height and this “dress” is very, very short. Even without my belly and backside sticking out (taking away precious length), this is definitely a tunic. It runs a little big. I felt like I could have gone a size down in the bust but possibly losing more length. There are ribbons at the waist but they were too flimsy to be much help pulling things in – they seem more decorative than functional. Despite that, the dress is well made and feels good on. If I didn’t already have something similar, I’d be tempted to buy it in black.

Speaking of length – is it just me, or do plus size dresses keep getting shorter and shorter? I was hoping that it was just a seasonal (spring/summer) thing but the trend has continued. I stopped ordering dresses from Torrid because most are crotch length or higher. I don’t mind showing some leg… but geez! Luckily, my jeggings were warm (very important!) and tucked into my boots nicely.

Christmas Lights

I’m in love with the little camera necklace that Chris bought me for Christmas – so you will probably be seeing it a lot. Several family members complimented me on it at the party. He said he is bad at buying presents… but did well in my opinion!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Stay warm!

The best gift of all

The holiday season is chock full of negative messages especially when it comes to our bodies and food. Give the best gift of the season to yourself and others this weekend! Yes, I said the best.

Leave the body loathing, body shaming and moralization of food at home.

Enjoy the holiday! Eat, drink and be merry. Visit with your family and friends. The holiday season is already hectic enough. Why add more pressure? If you want, take it a step further and gently discourage this behavior in others as well.

Good will to all!

Food is often used to bond in families during the holidays, at least in mine. What about yours? Despite this fact, you are able to say yes or no – without guilt. I know it can be challenging, but you can.

You do not need to feel guilty for what you choose to eat – food is food. You have nothing to “make up” for later – c’est la vie! And you have absolutely no reason to apologize for your choices because it is just that… your choice. Your body, your business.

Aunt Martha really wants you to try her holiday pie. You don’t want a piece but the pleading in her eyes makes you feel guilty. Guess what? You can say no. The same goes for someone asking – should you should be eating xyz, are you *really* going to have another cookie… you want it? Have at it.

Historically, I have found it easier to acquiesce, rather than confront in these type of situations because I don’t want to make a scene but no more. It is better for my well-being to stand up for myself.

Even with a food allergy, people can still seem confused when I (or my mother, same allergy) refuse their delicious holiday treats. I’m not trying to offend, merely keep myself from getting sick! Then having to explain that it is the ingredients, not their cooking… oh boy. It gets interesting when it is the same people, year after year.

And sometimes a girl just wants a cookie.

We are inundated with so many negative messages about how our bodies should look, how we should feel about them and what we should eat. Things that are designed to make us feel bad about ourselves. Things that tell us we should deprive ourselves in order to be “better”.

Screw that.

Set aside the holiday anxieties. Enjoy the day to the fullest and celebrate as you wish – not how others dictate it for you.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

How do you deal with these situations or anxieties during the holidays?

Five Take: Holiday

Oh look, time for Five Take… again! This round we’re back with a couple of new faces, in addition to those you know and love! Make sure to visit Claire, Rebecca, Gina and Becky to see how they’ve styled the challenge this week (direct links below).

Forget what Five Take is about? One theme, five people – resulting in five different looks. The only restriction is having to shop from our closets. Easy enough, right? This is sort of a “last hurrah”… until the new year but never fear – we will return!

Our theme for this week is holiday or “festive” outfits. When thinking about this type of outfit, my mind immediately thinks of a fancy party and sparkles but unfortunately I didn’t attend any this week.

My outfit isn’t really what you might normally think of as a traditional “holiday” outfit… but it is “holiday” (and sparkly!) nonetheless!

Five Take: Holiday

Dress – Avenue, 26/28
Cardigan – Lane Bryant, 22/24, here.
Tights – We Love Colors, EE in Amethyst
Necklace – Style & Co, Macy’s
Belt – Torrid
Bracelet – Torrid from Marilyn
Boots – Fitzwell, “Syrup” via 6pm.com

This past weekend has been my “holiday” because I actually asked for time off work (!!!). My personal photographer boyfriend Chris is visiting from Texas and we stayed in San Francisco for a few days – where these pictures were taken, but more about that later!

We left the city on Saturday and went to my parent’s house for my belated birthday dinner. Thus, this outfit. We were supposed to go to Disneyland (which is why I asked for days off) but my mom is having knee surgery early next week and I wanted to stay in town to help her out. She told me not to worry… but come on! She taught me better than that.

Five Take: Holiday

With “holiday” in mind, I wanted an outfit that was a little sparkly, a tad dressy (birthday celebrations and all) but still something I could wear around the city and my hometown without feeling overdressed. This outfit fit the bill!

For once, I’m actually wearing and posting about something I’ve recently bought. I picked up this sparkly cardigan a few weeks ago at Lane Bryant and absolutely love it. I would have never paid full price for it but it pretty much fulfills all of my “favorite” cardigan requirements: cropped, fitted and awesome. Buying bras during the Real Women (ugh!) dollar events can really come in handy with the “free” money!

I’ve worn this Avenue ponte sheath dress for a few job interviews and once to school… but this is the first time I’ve had some fun with it. Each time I put it on, I wish I bought it in the other 2-3 colors. The fit, cut and material are all fantastic. I wish I could say the same about their offerings this season. Scratchy polyester knits galore!

Statement pieces, bold patterns and bright colors are my bread and butter but I’ve really come to love the classic pieces in my wardrobe that can be styled in so many different ways. And it is great when the two mesh so well!

Birthday Princess

My mom got me a princess tiara and a sparkly feather boa for my birthday. She’s starting the princess complex a little late! This “holiday” outfit is a bit of a stretch… but there will be a couple others popping up in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

Don’t forget to check out how the others styled their holiday outfits!

Claire – A Monkey Fatshionista
Rebecca – The Plus Side of Me
Gina – Fat Fit Fine
Becky – The Ramblings of Mrs BeBe

Have you picked out your holiday outfits yet? What are you wearing?

Another year older

Well, today is my 26th birthday. It was pretty mellow (or lame, but I’m fine with that). I spent the day with some family between working and cleaning the house. Lots of fun! The real celebration will happen in the next couple of weeks.

Instead I will tell you about my early birthday dinner. Saturday night, we decided to go out and I chose a mom & pop type seafood restaurant in a nearby town called The Nantucket. I’m not a fan of seafood but I figured… I’M A GROWNUP, LET’S TRY NEW STUFF! And in the last few years, we’ve kind of exhausted the gluten free options locally.

The food was amazing. Like I never want to go back and ruin my vision of this perfect meal. I prefer to not eat out because the food is usually gross or makes me sick, not fun but this was great. Crab/Shrimp Louie = <3

Either way, I'm not here for a food review! Earlier in the day I worked and went to a baby shower, so by the end of the night I was a little rumpled. Thanks to my mother for taking my pictures, lit by the headlights of the car. HA HA.

Top – Evans, 30/32 UK
Cardigan – Liz Claiborne
Skirt – ASOS Curve, 26 UK
Necklace – Macy’s
Belt – Torrid
Tights – Avenue, EE
Flats – Clarks “Book Pump” in black, 11M.

This outfit is me experimenting with a monochromatic outfit, with little pops of color. In this case – pink lipstick, pink nails, pink belt, teal eye makeup and a chunky, teal necklace.

I like how it turned out, even if it is still the same silhouette – it relies less on big chunks of color but is fun without being… too much. I own the same skirt in a few colors, so switching it out was tempting.

Another year older

Earlier today we went and grabbed some gluten free cupcakes from a local bakery. I would have taken pictures but… I’m sleepy and the extras are in the freezer. I planned to make my own gluten free cake and so did my mom, but neither of us actually got around to it. Thankfully, this bakery exists just down the freeway. ;)

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Hope you all had a great weekend.
