Five Take: Brights

This week we decided to tackle “brights” for Five Take but first I will entertain you with a story of my morning…

Here’s the deal – I’m a klutz. An “I don’t know how that knife slipped”, “Did anyone see that?”, “Oops, sorry about that drink”, “I didn’t mean to do that!”, “Ow, my finger!” klutz.

Good friends have joked that my mother should have made my middle name “Grace” and laughed. For the most part, it is well deserved. Things happen. I drop things, break things but after a while you learn to deal with it, you know? But for the last few years major “incidents” seem to be few and far between. Who are we kidding? I’m not complaining!

Then we have today.

Umbrella – Old Navy

I was asked to feed the neighbors cat for the weekend. No big deal. This morning I was walking back home and slipped – no warning. It is weird, usually I can feel myself start to slip or lose traction and manage to keep my balance? Slick sidewalks in San Francisco and the tile floors in BART are a good forum for learning, I guess. Either way, it happened in a split second and I fell onto my knee just as I was about to step off the driveway and into the street.

First thought was, “Ouch.” then a quick glance up and down the street for people or cars. My pride was hurt but thankfully nobody saw! Score. Then again, here I am telling the internet.

But why did it happen? The sun had been out for a few hours, sure the ground was still a little wet. The concrete didn’t have a whole lot of texture but I was wearing my Danksos – you know, thick tread, non-slip. WHAT GIVES UNIVERSE!? I’ve trained myself to walk a little slower in the city – I guess I need to stick to that whenever the ground is wet.

I’m more annoyed that I landed on my knee, instead of my ass – which would have been preferable. I guess when walking down a steep driveway, I should be lucky I didn’t fall on my face. Guess there is always next time…

The morning’s events changed my plans (and outfit) for the day. I decided to keep ice on my knee and do homework because it has become a never ending PILE. By late afternoon, I was fine. You can see the teensy scrape on my knee. Not even a bruise. Yup – all this melodrama for nothing! I expected at least a little bit of purple…

Five Take: Brights

See that little speck of pink on my knee? Yeah, that.

I totally broke my rule about buying things that don’t fit properly when I bought this coat and it’s green twin… cough. Yes, I bought two. And that issue (too small in the stomach) was a minor compromise for great fit elsewhere AND amazing colors. Oh, did I mention it has a hood? A detachable hood. None of my coats have hoods, that was a major selling point.

There are a couple of coats in my closet but honestly – in the winter, particularly when it rains I lust for bright colors. I’ve had terrible luck finding brightly colored coats in my size. My local Sears had a whole rack covered in these coats but only two in a 24/26. I had my heart set on the wonderful cobalt blue but settled for the green. When driving home from my parent’s house on Friday, I decided to stop in Sears and try my luck. There was no plus or women’s section to speak of – save one teensy rack with a bunch of ugly coats… and yes, THE COBALT BLUE COAT THAT I WANTED – IN MY SIZE. I’d say that was pretty lucky! So now I have two.

While I was tempted to go completely technicolor for Five Take, I decided to utilize the bright coat and a few bright accessories with a neutral base – black skirt, cream top. This is very similar to something I might wear to a class – though probably with the shirt tucked in with a belt. Running errands with a “wounded” knee didn’t constitute much effort. The bag is from ASOS – I prefer to carry cross-body styles because it is easier to commute with. Plus they tend to be bigger which means I can shove more crap in them AND carry a camera. Win, win. I picked these shoes up in January to wear for classes and casual outfits. I needed something comfy but kind of cute at the same time.

And of course, we can’t forget my insanely bright umbrella!

Don’t forget to visit Beth, Elizabeth, Monkey and Valerie, to see their outfits!

So I’m curious – do you like to wear bright colors? What is your favorite?

OOTD: Losing light

A few weeks ago I was out visiting my family and I managed to con my youngest brother into taking some pictures for me before the sun went down. My brother is going to be 15 and he thinks what I do is hilarious (aka stupid). Then again, my family is happy that I take pictures of myself instead of them!

He wasn’t really thrilled when I stopped on one of the busiest roads in town, right next to where he goes to high school. It wasn’t intentional, I swear! The sun was going down and I was driving west for a nice view… *cough*

To get these, I had to promise to help him with his homework. For my youngest brother, “helping” him with homework has always consisted of doing the work for him. I refuse. I went to high school already! I try to help but also make him actually do the work or you know, think. He is a con artist and a liar who can cry at the drop of a hat. I know this because my mother thinks he is very much like me. I take offense at that! I never mastered the art of willing myself to cry, unfortunately.

One downside of having my siblings take pictures is none of them seem to understand that to take pictures that aren’t blurry… you need to keep the camera still.

Jacket – Lane Bryant
Shoes – Dansko
Tights – We Love Colors, Light Tan (gifted)
Bracelet – Evans

As I’m going through my closet, I keep finding pieces of clothing I haven’t worn in a long time or sometimes not at all. This blouse is one that I pulled the tags off of and never wore. I think I’ve put it on once or twice but always changed for something else, so I thought I’d give it a chance! It is a floral print blouse, how could I say no?

We Love Colors kindly sent me these tights after being featured on their style blog in February. The lighter colored tights seem to vary a little from the brighter hues. I’m not sure if this is just my luck or due to the dyeing process. Both of my light colored tights are a little splotchy in areas and developed runs in the top of the thighs on the first outing. On the other hand, my brighter pairs have held up really well after months of wear and washing. My tights roundup is long overdue – since it is almost spring but I might finish it up soon. I have a really bad habit of drafting posts and never finishing them. ;)

Crazy face, ftw?

The last few weeks I’ve been busy with midterms – catching up, studying and getting ahead on reading. Technically I am on spring break right now but I still have tons of work to do. And I’m taking classes at two schools, so one is in session and the other is not. On top of that, I spent a week nauseous and light headed from a new medication but I’m finally recovering from that. If it isn’t one thing, it is another!

My first year of blogging here is coming up pretty quick – stay tuned for a treat!

It is that time of year again…

Avenue sundresses! I’ve raved talked about them before and worn them all year round for the past two years. Guess what? They are back!

These dresses are hands down some of my favorites and probably the most worn items in my entire closet. That is saying something! At this point I own maybe 6-7 of them? The fabric seems to vary from year to year but they all wash and hold up really well. Especially my very first – the black and white dress, worn here, here and here.

I feel like a broken record because I say this every time I write about one – but it is true!

So far there are only three prints released, last year a few more showed up as it got closer to summer. Take a look:

Yesterday morning I had to go return a few things at the Pinole Avenue and saw the third dress on the rack.

“No!” I thought to myself. “You don’t need another dress!”

So I started thinking about last year when I fooled myself into thinking that I didn’t want/need them or figured I could wait for a sale. In early summer, I changed my mind and ran around to my local stores, searching for the prints I wanted but they were scarce. The cute ones, especially in the larger sizes, disappear fast! Given how much I wear them, I figure paying full price ($24.90) saves me the driving/gas/worry/heartache later. My cost per wear is pennies anyway. It makes sense, right?

Either way, I had the credit and then some from the return so the pink/orange print came home with me. I might cave in and buy the blue floral as well. Now I just need the weather to cooperate! It is supposed to rain for the next few days.

Five Take: Nautical

The nautical trend seems to hit us each spring – stripes, navy, rope/gold accents, deck shoes… am I forgetting anything? Honestly, I’ve never really been a fan but some of the more simplistic looks have been growing on me lately. Lots of neutrals with a punch red or sometimes yellow. And stripes, lots of stripes.

We originally had something else planned for Five Take this week but switched it up at the last minute. And I was left debating what I was going to wear!? The yellow striped shirt was out because I wore that last week. What can I say – I need a little variety. It also might have been sitting in the dirty laundry pile until I got home this evening…

Anyway, I decided to take a few well-loved pieces in my wardrobe and create an outfit with a subtle nautical feel without using navy. Did I succeed?

Oh, and look who showed up! My tan cardigan I was moaning about a few weeks ago decided to make an appearance. I have no idea where it was hiding.

Today was the Second Saturday’s Fat Meet-Up that happens every month over in San Bruno at Sarah’s cafe. We had a great chat and oh, I got to meet Marilyn Wann! Who is absolutely fabulous, if you were wondering. It was a great day! Before heading home, Sarah graciously took my picture. Thank you! I love this little hallway that the businesses open up to.

As I was getting ready to leave, I noticed a great spot to take pictures. I thought it was too late – which is why I had Sarah snap a few for me but it turns out there was just enough light to act a little silly and get watched by the locals.

My new glasses arrived a few days ago. I didn’t have insurance and thus get any last year but decided to opt for prescription sunglasses because nothing has really changed from my previous eyeglasses. And can I just say – OH MY GOD! How come nobody has told me how amazing prescription eye wear is? I feel like I have been missing out.

I always hated the giant, bug eye sun glasses on me but I tried on every pair in the optometrists office and these were my favorite. They also happened to be one of the most expensive, ugh. Why me? I made another round of the sunglasses but they were clearly a winner. They felt better/more comfortable than anything else and I thought they were cute as hell. Vanity is awesome, yes?

Right now I’m the only one with Five Take up, but don’t forget to check back and visit Beth, Elizabeth, Monkey and Valerie, to see their outfits!
